The Real Thing

sunrise_ogunquit.jpg

Sometime last week, maybe Saturday.

“Karen, how would you like to watch the sunrise with me? It’s winter and we won’t have to get up before 5.”

“I don’t think so. But if you want you can come to my house. We can see the sun through the bathroom window.”

“I’m not talking about a fake-ass sunrise. I mean the real thing. Over the ocean, like Halibut Point.”

It wasn’t until she laughed at me that I realized not everyone believes as I do. And, I have a feeling rakkity might be the first to start a pummelin’. Sun rising over trees? So what. In a canyon? Great light but I need to see the fiery orb lift off from the water. I guess a desert sunrise would qualify.

I awoke too late last week and besides it was cloudy. This morning my iPhone rang at 6:35 but I was already in the shower.

Now, I have to confess that fake-ass sunrises can be warm ones, and that’s a good thing, because standing on the beach facing a stiff wind forced me back into my truck. Still, I got some good shots.

I haven’t done a sunrise in a long time and after I uploaded my photos I realized that a. I shoulda brought my tripod, and b. I shoulda settled on focal length and exposure time. If I had I would’ve captured a nice non-jumpy slideshow.

  1. I LOVE sunrises over water! You have no idea how many times I’ve tried to see the sun rise over the ocean. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really count (for me) if there there are clouds on the horizon. (Although your sequences were very nice, Mike, and I applaud your beautiful work!)

So far, I’ve only seen sunrises over cloudless water in (1) the Solomon Islands and (2) the Great Barrier Reef. But I’ve got no pictures, dammit.

What I’d really like to see is a dawn Green Flash. They’re as rare frog hair. I’ve only seen them at sunset.

Mrs rakkity & I will have a chance to see dawn sunrises over water on the island of Stromboli in May. And if the horizon is clear and the volcano isn’t erupting I’ll make a movie, I promise.

  2. Matt and I caught one green flash off the coast of Newfoundland. “Mom” was looking the other way and missed it. They don’t call it a flash for nothing.

Wow, your standards are even higher than mine. Might mean I’ve seen only one pure sunrise. Here’s an old Martha’s Vineyard sunset sans clouds.

  3. Oooh, aaah! Reminds me of our sunsets in Key West a few years ago, but the Key West horizon wasn’t clear like like that.
