Pesky Big Bird

I sat in my truck, and through the open passenger window, took photo after photo as this blue heron stood motionless. I changed lenses, snapped a few more, and then I turned off my camera and laid it in on the seat. At that moment, the heron plucked a fish from the pond, looked at me, winked, and then flapped those wings like bed sheets and flew away.

  1. I blew something vaguely similar the other day (but through inaction, not poor timing) — leaving work during the highest flood, there was a sunset-lit swan swimming in what would otherwise be the fields beside the road. Beautiful, but odd — and trite, I thought at the time, not realizing just where it was. I drove on. Days later, with the waters receded and the field looking like a field again, it occurred to me that a before and after would have been pretty funny … Damn.

  2. I wanted to ask you to record those water levels, thinking an after and before photo, maybe near the bridge, would be of interest. But your fundamental problem is your busy work life. Sure, you’re making tons of money and spreading your well-deserved reputation world wide, but at the cost of stopping for those sunlit swans and having breakfast with your former friends.

  3. Great picture, Mike, despite the loss of a potentially better one. Ditto on the comments about El Kib working too hard.
