“This little humingbird is call the Booted Racket-tail…. very fierce with other hummers (who, I am sure, lust after his boots!) but only the size of my index finger.”
A winged work of art! Very trendy, Uggs-like feather-booties — I wonder if they’re functional as well as aesthetic? Thanks!

Do those booties keep his legs warm? But it must not get very cold in the Equadorian jungles, so maybe they are attractive to potential mates?

What a pretty little well accessorized bird.

What a wonderful turn of phrase: “well accessorized bird”! Yes, there are a few species of hummers which have “boots” which they believe help attract mates (only the males have them). But who knows? It does get quite cold in these jungles (photo was taken at ~10,000 ft).

This is one fine parabolically festooned little hummer!
smiling Dan
All he needs is a matching plummed iPod on his chest–oh wait, he makes his own music…
{beautiful pic — how’d you get him to stand still enough? And how about some tales of Ecuador?}
