  1. Many Happy Returns of the Day !!! Or as Wol (that’s Owl, in Winnie-ther-Pooh) would say,
    “HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA

    BTHUTHDY”

  3. Adam, do you know the correct spelling of that quote off by heart? Remind me to bring my copy from 1950 next time we get together. My mother gave it to my father before they were married “bekas he has to be six befor they wil let him be twenti-one”.

Speaking of which, PG, how old are you now?

  4. I’m 20 now, although judging by the picture Michael chose to put on my cake, he thinks I’m still two going on three.

  5. Good point. But are you too young to to indulge in joyous remembrances of past events?

  6. Perhaps you rec’d a Useful Pot to Keep Things In?!

Jennifer, what Adam wrote is the correct spelling: …IN WHICH EEYORE HAS A BIRTHDAY AND GETS TWO PRESENTS

‘So Owl wrote . . . and this is what he wrote:

    HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA
    BTHUTHDY.

    Pooh looked on admiringly.

“I’m just saying ‘A Happy Birthday’,” said Owl carelessly.’
“Well, actually, of course, I’m saying ‘A Very Happy Birthday with love from Pooh’

  7. Yes, I recognized that was the correct spelling. That’s why I asked (very much impressed) whether he had that off by heart. I always have to double check because (as your quote indicates) it’s pronounced differently — and I’m Wobbly at spelling those words which are spelled differently from how they are pronounced. (It’s good spelling, but it Wobbles.)

You skipped part of the quote which I think is quite important, since it tends to confuse me that no part of HIPY PAPY BTHUTHDTH THUTHDA BTHUTHDY looks at all like “with love from Pooh”. Wol doesn’t claim to have included that until after Pooh says (“very much impressed”): “It’s a nice long one”. Actually, it still surprises me that Pooh doesn’t catch Wol out on that, because surely Pooh (although he can mostly only read things once he’s been told what they say) could recognize his own name. But recognizing your name and noticing its absense are different, I guess.

Meanwhile, we have long since passed the time when PG was “going on having a real birthday.” We really should try to fit our celebrations in more respectfully next year, when — since he’s been 2 or 3 and 6, we may have to let him be twenti-one.
