Poem For Adlai Stevenson And Yellow Jackets
\n \u00c2\u00a0
\nIt’s summer, 1956, in Maine, a camp resort
\non Belgrade Lakes, and I am cleaning fish,
\npart of my job, along with luggage, firewood,
\nSunday ice cream, waking everyone
\nby jogging around the island every morning
\nswinging a rattle I hold in front of me
\nto break the nightly spider threads.
\nAdlai Stevenson is being nominated,
\nbut won’t, again, beat Eisenhower,
\nsad fact I’m half aware of, steeped as I am
\nin Russian novels, bathing in the tea-
\nbrown lake, startling a deer and chasing it by canoe
\nas it swims from the island to the mainland.
\nI’m good at cleaning fish: lake trout,
\nthose beautiful deep swimmers, brown trout,
\nI can fillet them and take them to the cook
\nand the grateful fisherman may send a piece
\nback from his table to mine, a salute.
\nI clean in a swarm of yellow jackets,
\nsure they won’t sting me, so they don’t,
\nthough they can’t resist the fish, the slime,
\nthe guts that drop into the bucket, they’re mad
\nfor meat, fresh death, they swarm around
\nwhenever I work at this outdoor sink
\nwith somebody’s loving catch.
\nLater this summer we’ll find their nest
\nand burn it one night with a blowtorch
\napplied to the entrance, the paper hotel
\nglowing with fire and smoke like a lantern,
\nfull of the death-bees, hornets, whatever they are,
\nthat drop like little coals
\nand an oily smoke that rolls through the trees
\ninto the night of the last American summer
\nnext to this one, 36 years away, to show me
\ntime is a pomegranate, many-chambered,
\nnothing like what I thought.<\/p>\n

Both he and Debbie thought the naked redhead (Eurydice) was unnecessary. I tried to argue that without clothes the actress portrayed greater vulnerability.<\/p>\n

Matt replied, “Neither you nor Debbie should even have an opinion about this. She doesn’t like naked people, and you like them too much.” <\/p>\n
