{"id":675,"date":"2005-08-28T08:08:30","date_gmt":"2005-08-28T16:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mainecourse.com\/mt\/?p=675"},"modified":"2005-08-28T08:08:30","modified_gmt":"2005-08-28T16:08:30","slug":"romance-in-the-seventies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mainecourse.com\/mt\/2005\/08\/28\/romance-in-the-seventies\/","title":{"rendered":"Romance in the Seventies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Borrowed from a recent New Yorker<br \/>\nFor  An Old Girlfriend, Long Dead<\/p>\n<p>Lying on that blanket, nights on the seventh green&#8211;<br \/>\nin the dry air the faint scent of gasoline,<\/p>\n<p>nothing above us but the ragged moon,<br \/>\nnothing between but a whispered <i> soon <\/i>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Well, such was romance in the seventies.<br \/>\nWatergate and Cambodia, the public lies,<\/p>\n<p>made our love seem, somehow, more true.<br \/>\nOf the few things I wanted then , I <i>needed <\/i>you.<\/p>\n<p>I remember our last arguments, my angry calls,<br \/>\nthen the long silence, those northern falls<\/p>\n<p>we drifted toward our newly manufactured lives.<br \/>\nDoes anything else of us survive?<\/p>\n<p>That day in Paris, perhaps, when you swore<br \/>\nour crummy hotel was all you were looking for&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>each cobbled Paris street, each dry baguette,<br \/>\neven the worthless sous nothing you&#8217;d forget.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, a block away, the endless Seine<br \/>\nflowed roughly, then brightly, then&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Then nothing, Nothing later went quite that far.<br \/>\nI remember that spring. Those breasts.
