One of them, the welfare mother who drives eighty miles to her two minimum wage jobs while her six year old, home without proper supervision, shoots his six year old playmate. <\/p>\n<p>Reminded me of this scene from To Kill a Mockingbird.<\/p>\n<p>Scout, in the first grade, complains to her father, Atticus, that  Burris Ewell is forced to attend only the first day of school.  <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Let us leave it at this,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Atticus dryly. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You, Miss Scout Finch, are of the common folk. You must obey the law.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He said that the Ewells were members of an exclusive society made up of Ewells.  In certain circumstances the common folk judiciously allowed them certain privileges by the simple method of becoming blind to some of the Ewells\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 activities. They didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to go to school,  for one thing. Another thing, Mr. Bob Ewell, Burris\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s father,  was permitted to hunt and trap our of season.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Atticus,  that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bad,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I said. In Maycomb County, hunting out of season was a misdemeanor at law, a capital felony in the eyes of the populace.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s against the law, all right,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said my father, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s certainly bad,  but when a man spends his relief checks on green whiskey his children have a way of crying from hunger pains.  I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know of any landowner around here who begrudges those children any game their father can hit.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Mr. Ewell shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do that &#8211;.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Of course he shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t, but he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll never change his ways.
