Lake Effect
Dear Pesky Godson,
There’s not much to tell. The drive was long and boring and even my old time radio programs lulled me to sleep. I stopped four times for gas, twice for half hour naps and once for ice cream. No gin and tonic in Louisville – I just kept on truckin’.

I don’t even know how we got to the subject of rats. Helen likes stories and family stories the best. Maybe she wanted to be sure even the most benign ones will be handed down. James was her father’s younger brother. I didn’t ask her what kind of house he lived in.
“If you had a rat in the basement, how would you get rid of it?”
“Trap it, I guess.”
“Your great uncle, James, shot his.”
“in the house? In the basement?”
“You can imagine what his wife, Dorothy, thought. She didn’t know what he was up to. She was cooking dinner.”
