Paxie

Linda finally found, and brought home yesterday, her birthday present.

Meet the newest member of our family — a very cute female toy poodle — 8 weeks old, 2 pounds!

She’s overjoyed at joining a nice family and having a big brother. Remo’s been very tolerant, but is not yet ready to play or show her the ropes.

So, cute. What’s her name?

Poodles are very smart. Sometimes their owners are not. Sorry I missed that this cutie’s name is Paxie!

Paxie’sparents are not so smart either. Forgot to ask to see her eye exam to see if she has that which ails some poodles.

What was the name of that exam, again, and what eye conditions might it produce?

The disease is Progressive Retinal Atrophy – PRA -similar to retinitus pigmentosa in humans. It is genetic. Several breeds are susceptible, among them all varieties of poodle. It causes first night blindness (which our Duffy has) and then total blindness. The progression is inevitable; only the start time and rate of deterioration vary. As of about two years ago, they can do DNA testing to identify those dogs who should be spayed or neutered so as not to pass the gene to yet another generation. The test is from the Optigen company and most reputable poodle breeders now test potential breeding bitches and sires before allowing them to make puppies.

As long as you don’t let her do any driving at night you should be OK. Hopefully she won’t have it. It seems like every breed is afflicted with something. I can’t believe this didn’t come up over dinner Friday night.

Congrats. Puppy is adorable. It’s like seeing a baby in the grocery store. For one second it makes you want to have one just like it.

“His retinas are developing normally; to know for sure about PRA you need to send a blood sample and $260 to Optigen in Ithaca NY; his eyes are a little small, but he’s only a 10-week old puppy.”
