Spring Flowers and Snow, Snow, Snow

Hi Mike,

Boulder’s early spring flowers seem to be confused by the combination of low temperatures and intense sun this month.  The Corsican violets have come and gone, but now the crocuses have formed riots of purple in the town’s gardens. Meanwhile, up in the mountains, the snow keeps falling on avalanche terrain, making us XC skiers eye the slopes warily.  And underneath those deep drifts, the creeks are already gushing towards the Colorado, the South Platte, and the Arkansas rivers to feed the thirsty plains.

Great pictures, rakkity! From snow-capped peaks to tiny burst of big color — that’s quite a wide-ranging clime your wide-ranging elevations give you for all-but-simultaneous experience. Another plus of Eden. But good thing you saw that melt hole and didn’t experience it another way … (not that you’d’ve gone in far from the looks of it, but still … ).

Last year while skiing alone up near the Continental Divide, I almost skied right into a melt hole like that. If I had, I’d have broken my skis for sure, possibly also providing some more X-rays of more miscellaneous fractures for the blog.

Information for Michael, who may be confused: That wouldn’t be a good enough reason to encourage him.

Rakkity’s blog posts were informative and fun and, from afar, somewhat sterile like an operating room. That’s not to say I wasn’t amazed by his ability to tie one arm to his side and still slide down glaciers. Still, seeing his scars in person at our party in his honor, gave me the willies. No longer will I even joke about the need for blood and gore on this site. The same goes for my prodding of Goose, aka rakkity Junior. His brace and his xrays were sobering sights too.

I am duly chastened.
