White Out

I’m talking on the phone to Dan and I hear what sounds like a train coming though the middle of the house.

I said, “Hey, Diane, there’s a train in our house.”

“Yeah, that’s what they said would happen.”

“Who said what would happen?”

“The weather guy (Now that’s she watching TV she’s become this know-it-all). He said we’d get snow squalls.”

“Snow squalls? What about trains? And where did the outside go?  It’s gone.”

The squall lasted all of about five minutes before the moon reappeared.

Last Thursday, XC-skiing with fogy-buddy Joe, we got into a white-out situation at the Nordic Center in Frisco (just north of Breckenridge). Amazing how fast it came up. But it didn’t go away quickly. We were lucky enough to drive over Loveland Pass just before they closed it due to blowing snow. Back in Boulder, it was sunny with pink lenticular clouds in the usual cerulean sky.

The TV was a Christmas present.

Matt was driving when the snow hit. No passes and no possibility of disaster but it is an impressive winter event. Doesn’t happen often in these parts.

And, Goose, you do live in the Arctic.

I heard that “train” too…haven’t heard wind like that since Patagonia. And Matt was driving!? wow.

Mrs rakkity said there were wild banshees last night. I slept through them, but enjoyed the 50 deg temps the winds blew in this morning. The Simple Solar sign on our front lawn blew away. They found it in the bushes and poked its feet in the lawn again, but the last I looked it was leaning near horizontal.

When we drove out to Home Depot this morning, we noted a serious white-out up in the snowy mountains up ahead, then Beth pointed out raindrops on our windshield. As she said it, we drove into sunshine. Five minutes later the mountains were clear. The weather gods are playing with our heads.

I went skiing yesterday and came home to 71 degrees and sunny skies.

71 and sunny – I can only dream.

And, rakkity, I hope you’re carrying your camera with you, Can you imagine a late day rainbow over snow covered mountains?
