Here‘s an unusual movie of one of our favorite celestial objects.
The black curve is the edge of the Sun–the top of the photosphere that you see by eye. Above it is the roiling, boiling chromosphere as seen by Hinode’s ultraviolet telescope.

Ed, that is spectacular! Alas that the clip is so short, ’cause I could watch that awhile … ! Just amazing the insights technolgy can give. Thanks for that!

My sentiments exactly. The sun is so much closer than it used to be.

The clip is short because each frame is a few sec exposure, and a consecutive sequence can be no longer than 60 m (the duration of the sunlit side of an orbit).
