Venus

Mike,

There’s a wonderful picture on APOD today. A couple of years ago, I was shown how to see Venus during the daytime, and of course everyone has seen the moon a few times in daylight, but this is far, far better.

I’ll be coming up with a nice montage of Freeway art later today.

  1. Breathtaking.

I’m proud to say I saw Venus by myself during the day some years back. I had seen it during the pre-dawn hours and kept an eye on it as it got light. I was able to pick it out still at 9AM. But it was certainly not in the crescent phase, and I’ve never seen the moon so close to new. (I’ve always wondered how Muslims start and end the holidays, since I can’t see the moon until 2 days after new, and that’s in a lucky month.)

  2. My first reaction to this was “oh, look at that itty-bitty crescent moon, and…what the hell is that big round thing next to it?!” Visions of apocaplyptic meteorites, deathstars, and expert photoshoppings flew through my head before I read the caption. A fabulous picture.

  3. Ha Ha! That’s almost the same reaction my daughter Katie had. She couldn’t figure out what that death star was doing there either.

  5. This website says that the record for naked eye sighting of the crescent moon is 15 hours after the new moon. The Arabs, living in desert country, probably have the edge on us here on the cloudy, rainy eastern seaboard.

  6. I just shared this on my website and 50 of my friends have already shared it! Your article has brought much enjoyment. I am amazed at how quick your write up came up on my mobile. I even found myself shocked and dismayed by how people reacted. {I certainly enjoyed every single minute reading this.
