Matthew Writes Home

Hey parents,

I have a few minutes before my next class so I thought i would email you guys. I am aware that just one email will not do justice to how long it has been since my last but I hope you can accept my apologies and know that it has just been very busy. First and foremost I am loving college and everything is working out very well so far. I have made a lot of friends and my classes are going well. It is exactly what i was looking for in school and I am glad that I picked the right one. Aside from going to class I have been exploring the city and the things to do there. Philly is great and not nearly as bad as it is made out to be although some sketchy stuff does happen now and then. For example last night there was a huge fight in front of my dorm, a huge drunken brawl that i could hear from my room. No big deal and I was not involved however a few kids from my building did end up getting arrested. See it is just things that keep life interesting. And if nothing else the city is just that. very very very interesting. I love living in a city with so much do to and so many people everywhere, NOW DAD this isn’t to say that i don’t miss all my friends and my home, because i do. But if forced out of that situation this is a good one to be in. Thank you for all your emails and packages and stuff. They really help and I enjoy receiving them. The starbucks card was a good idea. thanks I finally got my PNC bank card and am going to deposit the money into it tomorrow. The food here is exactly what i have wanted all my life and the fact that it goes to a meal plan is even better, to eat there is basically anything that i could ask for. Sushi, thanksgiving dinners, subs, taco bell, burger king, delis, chinese food and of course the buffet thing that you guys ate at. Not only that but there are plenty of other places to eat around.

All right, time for class

hope to hear from you soon
love
matt

I surely hope that all you empty nesters have gotten at least one email like this one from your flown-away birds. How happy does this godbaby sound!

I can just see Matt’s mom clutching her heart at the arrested comment. Matt, a little censorship might be necessary for her survival!

Since this is Matt’s very first email (in spite of what he wrote), Diane’s found the time to read it seven times, and each time found something new to laugh at. He could’ve written about bungee jumping off the roof of his dorm and she would have cooed, “Isn’t that cute.”

No, Jen, no censorship necessary. I like to hear those words, “I wasn’t involved.”
(And Matt isn’t the drunken brawl type, anyway. He’s a peacable guy.)
And, it makes me happy that he sounds so happy.

I thought Mama K might be clutching her heart at another comment … “The food here is exactly what i have wanted all my life”. Dude, seriously …

But it’s great to hear you so lit up! It’s your life you’re living, and we all hope it’s lived large!

Adam, worry not. The “food I’ve always wanted” comment is quite mild, all things considered. Mama K will not give it a second thought. Probably not even a first one. Such stories I could tell! But, I shan’t.

By the by, my niece Kate and I were at Oberlin last Saturday where we met up with Hil B (LaChica) for a lovely visit. We spent a bit of time in her dorm room, met any number of her new friends, and had lunch on campus with her and one of those friends. Hil looks terrific, seems to be adjusting to college life quite nicely, and is, as always, lively, engaging, and so very dear.

I’ve responded to the roar of the crowd (Jen and maybe one other person) and added spell checking. For me, Activate Spell Check while Typing does not work, however, typing then clicking on Check Spelling does. It even offers suggested words if you click on what’s highlighted.

‘First and foremost I am loving college and everything is working out very well so far’. What more could you ask for.

Hey Matt, glad you’re enjoying college. Now, how ’bout something about how great your classes are? With examples?

In all of Patrick’s 6 years (or was it 7 or 8 years?) and Katie’s 4 years at the Univ MD, we never got anything either by word of mouth or by email as effusive as Matt’s email. On the other hand, the UMD is only 13 miles away from home, and we saw them every weekend, which may have had something to do with it. Being far away is a really key thing. In January this will be tested, only in reverse.

In January when you desert your children? We would never do a thing like that. We’ve already picked out plots in nearby by Mt. Hope Cemetery so Matt knows we’ll never leave Acton.
