Air Freshener

How would you like to wake up on a Saturday and find something like this  as you fumble around for your morning coffee? Sure beats fire alarms and thick smoke.

  1. What does this have to do with the title? Or perhaps I should ask, What brings waking to fire alarms and thick smoke to mind? Is it an anniversary?

Speaking of anniversaries … we just celebrated the one-third-of-a-minute* birthday of my first born child, whom I ought to be getting used to introducing as my son**. I went browsing with him in our local kitchen supply place for adult-life type supplies. And he had an important experience. The salesman said something about “guys like us who …”. (I noticed the phrase, and thought about how many ways that could be interpreted.) It turned out to have been extremely important to Z, as the second time he had been identified as male by a stranger, without being coached. (The other time was when a man swore at him but didn’t use female-specific-explatives.) So that made him want to leave the store quickly so as not to do something feminine, and blow his image. I see hormones looming in my son’s future. Aargh.

    *twenty-second

**I haven’t yet managed that even once, except via a photograph — that is, “Sure, I have pictures of my kids. This is H-, and this is my son Z-“

  2. I suppose I really should have explained, for those who don’t know or didn’t remember, that there were no doubts whatsoever 22 years ago that I gave birth to a daughter. Doubts began to arise … I dunno, I first heard about doubts a year ago, but I suppose I could/should have noticed signs of doubts 5 or 6 years ago.

  3. What wonderful child wrote that sweet sentiment to you lovely people? Must have been mine. :o)

J – Happy Birthday to Z! How wonderful for him to have this confirming experience. He must now realize that this is not just a passing fad or trend in his thinking if it made him feel so good. What courage he is displaying. You have raised a very strong and resiliant child. You must be very proud.

  4. I think Jen needs a new name — maybe PS for positive spin? But thanks. (I’ll work on my attitude.)

Still awaiting the “Air Freshener” connection, Michael.

  5. Sometimes it’s easier to post something than to dream up a title. This one was just a failure.

  6. I totally forgot that I did that! Not one of my finest pieces, but certainly one of my truest.

  7. And I thought Susan wrote it!
