Phone Home
Sometime back around January 19th Matt lost his iPhone. Today, after three months of snow that haunted and howled and refused to go away, and after torrential rains that kept my basement sump pump spewing water onto the front lawn, Hannah, Hil K’s sister, found it under some leaves on the outside ledge of her front porch. Matt plugged it in and after a full charge it works as if it’d never left his pants pocket. Riddle me this. Where has it really been? I swept the snow away from that porch back in January, before I raked the white mounds piled at the base of the house. Add Matt’s determined search, and Jen whom I kept hecktoring and Hil whose vigilance ping-ponged from Daryl’s house to that black topped area where Matt had briefly stopped, and you have a phone but not an answer.
Some raccoon probably took it back to its stump, tried to crack it to use on its non-AT&T carrier, then failing, returned it, but to a high and dry location near enough the scene, being more considerate than many humans would’ve been. See if there are new nocturnal camera shots …

Apple may give you some sort of prize for that story. Or let Matt be part of their advertising blitz.

Go for it … but don’t send them the link to Mainecourse!

Matt accuses me of conspiratorial paranoia because I refuse to believe the phone rested on the lip of the porch for three months. However, to get Matt’s name in print, I just might go with what we know.

There is a HUGE snow pile in the grass at the end of the parking area that is still a foot high. All winter it’s been 5 feet tall. My hunch is that it melted just enough for one of my neighbors to discover it. They most likely assumed it was from one of my kids and put it on my deck. It was NOT on the deck all winter as I checked it multiple times. Plus, it was covered with leaves and dirt, not something you’d find on MY deck. I’ll ask my neighbors and let you know.

Yesterday the only side effects from its winter vacation was reduced sound volume. Today even that has passed. So it was found on your deck?

FYI — January 19 to March 21 is much more like 2 months than 3 months. It’s still a long time in a snow bank, but I think the explanation makes sense, Jen — let us know if you hear otherwise.

It was found on the decking of the front porch outside the railing. Like someone just walked over and placed it there in front of where we park our cars at perfect eye level. There is no way it was there all winter. Plus, like I said, the phone was covered in dirt and leaves when she found it and the porch is protected and clean. Still haven’t seen a neighbor. I’ll leave a note in the morning.
