Back in the Day
The bearded chess players isn’t the only old photo I stumbled across while looking for Menemsha pics for Mary’s new computer. When I first saw this pic which Matt took, I didn’t really know who that girl in red was.

Menemsha? Mary?
But I IMMEDIATELY knew who the girl in red is. On the other hand, I’m having a lot of trouble with the year … although I see “Rock Walk 96” and “..K 2000”, so … not more than 7 years ago?

That would be December of 2002.

Yeah, the one titled maybe-hil IS, but who’s that next to her with her head between her knees?

That would be Cecelia:
And how is your toothless daughter?

Debbie!! She leaves today with her mom today to go home to prep to go back to school. It’s been a wonderful summer having her in the house. Bye Debbie! Come back anytime!

Grr, how come nobody tells me anything! I missed her entire visit? (I mean, I guess I knew she was here, but not that she was leaving again!)
The toothless one is NOT (toothless); cute as ever, and approaching pain-free status. Leaving on Sunday or maybe in the wee hours Monday.

Say, Jennifer, why did you choose “Cecelia” rather than the more usual “Cecilia”? I always wondered why my parents named my sister “Cecelia”. But now she calls herself “Ceci”, so the “i” is back.

Ed, I’m impressed that you even try to keep track — but mine is Hilary, and Hilary had her four wisdom teeth out. She’s been friends with Cecelia or maybe Cecilia (would Mike really pay close attention to that?) for a number of years; and Cec is apparently the one who was under the hat next to Hilary in comment 2.
Now, there’s a few spelling mysteries in my family anyway — the obvious one is one-L or two in Hilary? When we were considering options, one-L was the slightly more prevalent spelling, so we chose that. Then we got Hillary Clinton, and although I’m a little curious as to how she’s affected the number of girls named this, I’m sure she torqued the prevalent spelling to two-Ls.
And then don’t forget that Jen is also an active contributor to the blog, and her daughter is two-L Hillary. Jen, why two-L? Never mind. Jen is a MUCH better trend-spotter than I.
But I alluded to spellingS. There’s my sister Rebekah, not Rebecca; there’s my sister named Katarina (which can be spelled and pronounced about 6 ways — but not if you love her) who was called Ka Ka until her older sister went to school and found out what other people thought that was — the o.s. has always been a little bitter that my parents didn’t handle that themselves. There’s more, but I’ll stop there. It’s funny, I’m always very protective about the spelling my sisters’ names and always startled when people don’t know the “right” way to spell Jennifer.

As for my Hilary, we went with the single l as well as we had two in our last name. We didn’t want to appear greedy.

Oops. My bad. How very unobservant of me to think she had two.
As to greed … are you serious? I mean, did that cross your mind, about the last name?

Um, no. Just my obviously very bad sense of what I call humor. It’s not for everyone.

Jen’s Hil said because her generation grew up with text messaging that they’ve had to develop an acute sense of what those messages mean. Without body language and emoticons they (or she) thrives in a world of sarcasm.
I said many people miss my intent too, as I noticed growing up that my father’s quips were often mistaken for something other than innocent. There are many people (mostly women) who leave conversations with me scratching their heads. I think Hil’s Jen is one of them.
Funny thing is, I’m just a gullible as some of the people I torture. For instance, Jeffro from Indiana skewers me regularly, but does it so deftly, I always feel I’ve left a few IQ points scattered on the floor.
