For a while in Frank Zappa’s band, Zappa played lead guitar, and Vai played “stunt guitar”. His technique is not what they taught you in school, but it works. (My roommate last year was a big Steve Vai fan–I know quite a lot about him and have seen many DVDs of his concerts.)
