Why On Earth?

“Hello.”

“Hey, ______, where are you?”

“Where am I? I’m at college.”

“I know that, but where at college?”

“I’m in my room.”

“Studying again?”

“No, I’m about to play some football and then have dinner. Why’d you call?”

“I need to know when you ran into the back of my truck. That was two or three years ago?”

“Wait…that was the winter of my junior year.”

“So that’s three years. Junior, Senior and now Freshman in college.”

“No, that’s two years. Junior to senior is one and senior to Freshman is one more.”

“But… .”

“Don’t argue with me. I’m the mathematician. Why do you want to know.”

“I finally got the bumper fixed and I’m going to write it up. I’m not going to say who did it, but I will say how easy it was to fix and how stupid I’ve been.”

“How much did it cost to fix?”

“Forty-five dollars. And the estimate had been for fifty, but the guy said it took him less time than he figured.”

“That’s all? You can tell them who did it. I don’t mind, I learned something from it.”

“It was just an accident. Matt stopped in the snow and you didn’t. It’s not about you but me. How could I have waited two years? It’s been such a pain in the ass. With the bumper pushing against the tailgate, I could barely close the thing. And because the bumper covered up the hole which gives me access to lower the spare tire, I really haven’t had a spare. All that time, all that aggravation and for what?”

“Forty-five bucks. Go ahead, tell them I did it.”

  1. Faux painting of faux fruit. Very nice colors, lighting and composition. This version is even more like an oil painting:

(And what is the connection to the $45 collison?)

  2. I know who did it and I owe you $50….

Love the photo – but I agree with rakkity – what is the connection ?? not that there really needs to be one…”beauty balanced by collison chaos”?

  3. There is no connection because the real connections I’m able to make become fewer by the day. Which raises a tired old saw, and that is unless I get some help here, I’ll just continue to post music videos, or dead mother stories, or dialogues with strangers. I know rakkity {I like your “oil painting” better} is poised to assist, but I don’t hear any other offers.

  4. Michael you’re whining. If I ever have an interesting story I’ll send it along. I’m taking both dogs to the vet tomorrow, but I doubt that will yield anything. I went to the Sox game Tuesday night for no other reason than to Watch Ortiz break the HR record. It didn’t happen Tuesday. That would have been a good story with pictures. Caroline is coming home Sunday. Maybe that will inspire me. In the meantime, how about we compromise and you get one day a week to post a youtube video. We can call it Youtube Friday, or even Michael’s Youtube Friday.

  5. You would think my current life as an unpaid, nonmigratory, migrant worker would be fertile ground. So far, nothing but pretty apples.

And, I second Chris on the one YouTube day a week, named in your honor, of course!

  6. I vote for dialogues with strangers 6 days a week, and everyone else will take up the slack, with a youtube thrown in occasionally. Mike should be compiling those “interviews” into a book!

  7. Maybe I am whining and maybe I’m finding out who still cares about me.

  8. “Mike should be compiling those “interviews” into a book!”

Or running for cover in case one of my non-fictional characters stumbles upon their story. That’s what’s holding me back from publishing my latest.
