Or is it just that he’s deprived of the Photoshop crutches that otherwise guarantee success via oversaturation, burning in, and contrast-enhancement … ?

He’s not too old to learn. Btw, that floor before iPhoto>filter>Puerto Vallarta / Terra Cotta Floor was a uniform color of dried corn husks and the berries before iPhoto>Super Enhance>Make Edible were pale green.
