An urgent warning cry of “Rock!”, came from above, and I jumped to the shelter of a dwarf juniper on the steep gully of loose boulders we were descending. I heard the sound of some big rocks bouncing and rolling, and then it was quiet. The shout had came from Chuck, who was guiding our team of four down the west face of Black Steer Mesa. A few seconds after his shout there was a cry of pain from Phil, our best and fittest climber, who was descending the gully just below Chuck. More rocks rolled and then stopped. Both Chuck and Phil were out of my sight, and I called, “What’s happening? Are you guys okay?”.
