Adrift

An observant reader sent me this link to compare with the the sandy toes picture below. She asked, “Separated at birth?”

My crop of this photo prompted Diane to say, “My God, it looks like they set her out to sea.”

In many ways, those first days at school are not unlike being set adrift.

  1. Wise and touching juxtaposition. Precious little girl, and lovely photographs of her — always fun to see back into our beginnings, but especially sweet when the images are as good as these, and presented with thought! Thanks!

  2. Wow, she really went from blond to brunette! I bet she remembers who is on that pink lunch box which could also have been used as a tiny suitcase for the bear. It is fun to go back to those fleeting years and see the changes.

  3. Wow, that lawn pal in the linked photo does look just like my sandy toes. Am I deducing correctly (from the comment that sandy toes looked like Matt) that it is Matt?

And are these photos making anyone else cry? Or is that just a madre thing?

By the way, the “first day” picture must have been her first day of a new preschool/day care at age three? (Is it Sept. ’91?) And it must have been the place AFTER the place that thought she was developmentally delayed because she didn’t climb on the things she’d been told not to climb on. Of course, they also were concerned that at age 2 1/2 she didn’t talk — only panted gustily for a drink.

  4. What is it that makes us cry…them getting older or us getting older? Or wishing that their little selves could be easily revisited. Nothing warms the heart like a little girl in a sailor dress hugging a bear. I remember my daughter’s first day of pre-school as I was hugely pregnant ready to deliver her brother. She took to it like bees to honey which made it all very easy. However she needed me at her side by every birthday party she went to well into first grade! It feels like it was all fleeting though I certainly feel all 16 of her years. I do like the pix of little ones…even if the little ones are very old now (like Michael!)

  5. 1. Yes, that is Matthew.
    2. No tears here. Now, ask the guy with the eye shadow.
    3. There was a time when Hil didnít talk?
    4. The Michael we are referring to is your son, right?

These pictures all come from two family albums Jennifer loaned me. Iíd like to post them all, but I wonít. These albums are unusual in that they are not full of family-only-friendly photos, but as you can see, well composed, tightly cropped, animated vignettes, beginning with her marriage to Lew. Chronicled, besides the wedding and birthdays, are four generations of Jenniferís family, family vacations, close friends, and much more. Iím going to post todayís birthdays, and later, one more of Hil, then move on. At least that is todayís plan.

  6. Couldn’t you also post the lawn pal’s going to school picture so we can watch the twins diverge?
