Most of Us
I was showing Susan old family photos when I stumbled onto this one. I know the people, but what was the event? And is that a baking tray of beef balanced on an old coffee can? And a container of something I’d never admit to eating – Cheese Whiz?
First row: Mark Schreiber, Sammy, Karen Schiff, B.J. Sullivan, John Lewis.

I vote Thanksgiving (admittedly, short sleeves contradict), leftover turkey, sour cream for potatoes — definitely no Cheeze Whizzers in THAT crowd.

If Chris was born in July, and I am wearing a maternity outfit but not yet fully showing, then maybe it was Di’s birthday in March, 1980 (33rd). That’s a magical birthday to anyone from Catholic school. The Cheese Whiz was for the crucifixion?

Wow! There’s nobody in there I know. Those guys all have hair. Lots of hair. And everyone is smiling like jolly innocents. Dan’s right. It’s a good thing that we can’t see into the future. The past looks much more fun.

Peter had not seen the golden oldies photo when he called Monday night. As I described the lineup, he asked, ìWhose birthday was it?î
Which is what Diane and I (and Dan) finally decided. It must have been one of my (not DianeÃs) early ìsurpriseî birthday parties. That dates it : Saturday, June 14, 1980. A rained out barbecue brought indoors.
It might have been this party, when I arrived home on my bicycle to see Karen dart behind the stairwell that separates the living room on the left side from the kitchen on the right. Instantly seeing what was up, I sneaked in through the front door, circled around behind Karen ( and the rest of the crowd) and yelled, ìBoo.î She was so pissed. As if I was off script.
She had no clue how MillerÃs (IÃm going to include Peter) hate to be surprised. How much we need to be in control. The only event I can remember being caught unaware was the night of my bachelor party. It began as an innocent dinner out with Dan and Adam, but turned into an evening of debauchery with Eric and Tom and Peter. For some reason that reminds me of my favorite wedding photo .
