Wolf Fangs 2004
Last night Rakkity sent me the link to this summer’s hike into the mountains by the “fogies foursome.” The mountain range now has a pseudonym to keep it annoymous and unfindable, at least by readers of this blog. Rakkity tells me the accompanying text is sparse, but when time allows, he will add more. Yes, I guess I did complain, but it’s sparse by his standards as well as mine. Take a gander at last year’s adventure.
Clouds drifing into the Rift.
Hiking down to the Rift.
I’ve already added several paragraphs here and there since Mike posted the saga, and I’ve got a few more in mind that I’ll incorporate in the next couple of days. (I’ve added a date at the top that gives the time of last modification so you can see if there was any change since you last looked.)

Only a thrifty, penny-dreadful author like Mike would gripe about the lack of words, with such a wealth of pictures, each ostensibly worth 1,000……..
I confess, I DID like your commentary in The Beartooths Saga, but I’m nevertheless quite appreciative of the breadth and detail of the photographs, from lichens to panoramas, not shortshrifting the humans who were there. To quote [an unnamed source], “There must be a cabin in the mountains which would provide us with similar views. I know there is. Schreib could pay for it and we could hire college students to carry us in.”
As soon as we get all that handled, we’ll bug you for the access coordinates……… But many thanks for the post!

Funny, but I was thinking once you got beyond my hyphens, that that was the single most whiny and defensive sentence I’ve composed in a while. But look at the results. So there!

great admirer, which photo do you most identify with : Man at Rest or Sawing Wood?

I was actually thinkin’ “Takin a breather”. Or maybe “stonewood”………..

Last Years Wolf Fangs photos were spectacular! Compared to the few from this year, they look like a completely different part of the country. Maybe a different altitude? Can’t be a different season since last year’s trip was in August? When I saw the pictures of them sliding down the glacier all I could think was “who would remember to pack a ski jacket in August?”

The difference was the time of year–August last
year and June this year. We were barely out of
winter and into spring at that altitude (7000-8000′). We were only about 25 mi as the crow flies from the 2003 site, which didn’t make all that much difference.
Our altitude was about 2000′ less than last year,
which means the views were obstructed by trees!
At our other camp we were above timberline and had unobstructed views in all directions.
And with the early season, this year we had to really search for flowers to get nice pictures. We had about 3 times as much rain (also caused by the early season), and about 1/3 the sunshine. That had a big effect on picture taking. See the
new commentary about the Tennessee guys who said they hadn’t seen the sun for 30 days until the day we met them!
