Mountain Lion

lion_track.jpg

At 1:30 a.m. today residents of Mohawk Drive (Indian Village)†Acton reported hearing a loud growling noise outside their home. Officers responding heard the same growling noises and saw deer running scared through the area. The Environmental Police were contacted and advised the officers to stay out of the woods for the night hours and they will follow up today. Officers at one point saw the animal and described it as a long tan cat possibly 5 to 6 feet in length staying very low to the ground.

Residents are advised to use caution in or near wooded areas.

  1. ‘Twill be interesting to see how this plays out. Even NPR got in on it, though according to their reporting, no one had actually SEEN the beast, and “experts” were calling it nearly impossible, that there has been no population even in an adjoining state for decades. Nice picture, but that print looks to me so pristine it raises the question of hoax — but perhaps I’m overly cynical………… Mikey — it’s too cold to work; get out there and take the first conclusive picture, put this (but not yourself) to rest!

  2. Call me dubious2. But then, it does look a lot like the prints at
    http://www.bear-tracker.com/cougar.html

Unfortunately, any geek with an internet connection can get realistic prints, make a mold and a print, and do a number on us all.

We need a (cough) reliable on-the-scene investigative reporter with a good blog camera to show us the real thing.

Go get ’em Mike! (But keep your eyes on your back trail.)

  3. I’m quite interested in this story. There may be a real live growling big lion cat but it reminds me of Nevada, Mo. when once a year near Lamar or Carthage someone would say a panther was on the loose. So the good ole boys would get together with guns and booze and have a panther hunt. I never remember their bagging one. Thanks for this memory. HO

  4. And your story reminds me of living in Westwood, when one bright afternoon, Brian looked out the window and said, ìLook, thereís a lion.î
You sidled up to him and said, ìOh yeah.î I ran to the window, all bright eyed and excited, but saw only that dense copse of trees that separated our house from the Pricesí. ìWhere, where is it?î I cried. ìRight there!î Brian pointed. You said, ìCanít you see it?î I believe that to be the only time you ever took Brian’s side against me. I believe that because I know I was your favorite son.
