  1. Gee, Ed & Beth, what a journey, and what spectacular photographs. Having failed at many attempts to capture stained glass, I admire yours. And, Adam, I think you should take particular note of what the guy in the open-air market is selling in St. Gaudens. Nothing like full-sized photos to whet the appetite.

If I lose sight of Diane in K-Mart, I assume Iíll never see her again. I canít believe Beth, taking the second-way map to something-else, found her way back to the boat at all, let alone before it had motored away.

Your fearless driverís response to those switchbacky, guardrail-less roads reminds me of our drive through the French Alps. I began, but as we gained elevation, I forced Diane to take the wheel. I thought I might drive right off the edge and tumble those many miles down the mountainside. But as soon as Diane pulled away, I had to stop her and again resume driving, because I felt certain she was going to steer us to our deaths.

  2. Believe me, on those guardrail-less roads, it took all my forbearance to resist grabbing the wheel many times, and I was pushing those virtual passenger-side brakes into the floorboards. But imagine the adrenaline high of those cyclists whipping down the same roads at 100+ kph. We saw the cyclists pedalling up, but the ones going down were either lost in the mists or red-shifted into the invisible infrared.

  3. Iím not sure which I found more intimidating: the cars whizzing by us on these one and a half lane roads (oh yes, to enter the road we had to pass through two vertical stanchions less than a fat American car apart) or the rusted hulks of smashed cars in the ravines below. I do know, however, the tighter you hold onto that steering wheel, the more likely it is youíll join those in the ravine.
