  1. Which Helen in her wedding dress? HV in HJ’s dress. HV in her own. HJ in her own, wearing it once more at her daughter’s wedding? Both Helens in thier own wedding dresses? Precision, Mikey, Precision!

  2. Dear Wondering,

What is the title of the entry? Who do you suppose just got married? Which Helen looks like she just got married and which Helen looks like she’d like to lay a ruler across your bare knuckles?

The photo of my father below was taken the same year.

And one more thing. Diane tells me that your mother wore a similarly unconventional wedding dress.

And another thing. It is darn cold over here

  3. The title does not indicate which of the couples has just wed. Both men are wearing flowers. Is this a case of latent agism to go along with your other latent isms?

My mother wore a fancy suit (her description) as her wedding attire. According to the lore which is now accepted as history, while Flo was planning the traditional gala, she and Frank found a magnificent apartment and signed a lease. Since the rent was nearly the sum of their two incomes, they did not want to pay for it while it sat empty, so moved the wedding day up by some considerable number of months–thus the suit rather than a fancy white dress. However, since it was 1937 and my mother’s father had been out of work for at least part of the Depression, I’ve always wondered if maybe the apartment story was a face-saver for a proud family that simply could not afford a big wedding with all its parts and parcels.

  4. Nolong,

I like the way you rifle through drawers and look behind bureaus. How about asking your mother? Btw, she believes that photo is of her, and not you, but only because she remembers the dress.

  5. For most people, a story–even a made up one–repeated often enough becomes absolute truth. Were one to ask Flo why she did not have a formal wedding gala, she would recite the apartment line. Whether or not it once described reality no longer matters. Signing that lease advanced the wedding date, forcing her to wear a suit rather than a long white dress. That’s that.
