Matt and Me

“I can’t do anymore.”
“Anymore what?”
“I can’t paint anymore.”
“Why not?”
“I’ve been painting for nine hours. I can’t paint anymore.”
“Nine hours? We got here at 8”
“7:30”
“Right. But it’s only 2:30 now.”
Both of us quickly raise our hands, fingers extended. I use
my left hand to count full hours.
Matt begins, “8:30, 9:30, 10:30, 1:30…”
“I say, 1:30?”
“He begins again and this time finishes with seven fingers.
“See,” says me, “seven hours and a half hour for lunch (which we didn’t take because who wants to linger over leftover sole and a ham sandwich).
“How about if I help you paint?”
And that did help.
We both painted for another hour before Matt cleaned
and carried various tools back to my truck. And I have to admit,
no matter whose hand you are counting on, eight hours is
a long day.

  1. I hope you are paying my boy handsomely for his labors. The addition is handsome. However, I am surprised that Adam has accepted assorted window frame colors.

  2. How pretty is that? And how buff is that boy/man? Looking good (both objects)! I know we’re all at a point on this where momentum is getting harder to generate, but closure feels tantalizing nigh. At least it’s clear we can start on the inside soon. Bravo boys! Take a break, come back when rested.

  3. Auntisue is quite astute, though there are only 2 mullion colors, not “assorted”, and we didn’t make that decision obliviously (nor without the explicit concurrence of our contractor). The previous owners chose the “Terra” (brown) finish. We wanted the new to look new, and “brighter”. Inside we’re finishing the otherwise identical clear pine not with the orangey polyurethane of old, but a newer, clearer poly, so the “brighter/whiter” theme continues (except on the skylights, where we thought Terra was wiser, as we darkened our shingle color with the new roof).

I hope Matt feels handsomely rewarded (we’re certainly grateful for his contribution), but the contractor (his own paternal unit) determined his wage…….

  4. I see assorted. Dark on the left bay; white on the new; dark with lighter, but not white, surround trim on the right. I rather like it.

  5. CAn’t believe the detritus that other commenters have settled on here…especially when overlooking the remarkableness of Michael’s parenting role in exemplifying to his son the satisfaction from accomplishment under adverse working conditions.

Could we have a comment or two on that, Antisue and proudowner?

  6. This is wrong. Totally wrong. Where does the freedom of speech thing fall when there’s someone named Danno passing judgement on your thoughts and telling you what to write instead?!?!?!? Where Judges Scalia et al when I really need them?

  8. Auntiesue, have you read Scalia’s anti-homosexual rant? Would you have dreamed that someone like that would ever be making decisions that affect all of us? Have I been living in a cave of my own constructing?Do I have to copy and paste this into Eudora to make sure there are no typos?
