There are still four baby wrens, mostly unresponsive until the mother comes by with daily rations. I hesitate to say this, maybe it's a confession, but back when Skunk was alive not all the babies would fly away. Once I saw Skunk jump up and spill the entire nest onto the porch floor. It's what cats do.
I used to like that cat. Until it launched itself at my leg one day, viciously hissing, all 20 claws extended, against no transgression on my part. Now I like it even less. But who'd wanna eat anything so ugly anyway? Strong words from a vegetarian, I know, but tell me I'm wrong........

Posted by Michael.Okay, not viciously -- how 'bout an oxymoron like emphatically apathetically, and with prejudice? Truth, he seemed bored both before and after he'd assaulted me. But my regard for him, at least of his regard for me, had forever changed. Rest in peace, you neutered alpha male would-be-lion you. Sleep in peace, you baby wrens!
Posted by chastened.Personally, I liked Skunk. That cat hated the heat as much as I do, and I believe it was the heat that did the poor thing in. The heat and being left in the house in August for two weeks...but no point pointing fingers. So in deference to the late Skunk, I believe this blog to be a revisionist version of what really happened when Skunk ate the baby birds. As I remember, to better ogle the eggs a ladder was put up to the nest for the humans to get a better look. Alas, the ladder wasn't removed...what do you expect a cat to do...make a moral decision to ignore the contents of the nest? Why have kibble when you can have filet mignon?

Just wondering. My nest of House Finch and the mother were torn from a wreath, nest and all, and scattered all over my porch this week. I am heartsick!!
